Getting married on location can be a dream, but can a destination wedding be a reality?

Wedding experts say destination "I do's" happen a lot and emphasize they're not that tough to organize.

"This year, I've had 21 destination weddings," says Mindy Weiss of Mindy Weiss Party Consultants and author of "The Wedding Planner & Organizer." "I've never done so many in one year. This was the year they all wanted to go away."

According to The Wedding Report, a group that tracks wedding statistics and does market research for the wedding industry, its most recent figures on the trend show there were 259,000 destination weddings in 2008 with a value of $2.49 billion.

Why, Where and When

Most brides and grooms who want a destination wedding know their choice from the start.

"It's like the gown," explains Tiffany Cook of Dream Design Weddings & Events. "When they find 'that' property, they know it."

The appeal of a destination wedding can range from the need for privacy to an urge for a romantic getaway.

Weiss says couples are always passionate about the destination. For example, when Weiss' clients singer Katy Perry and actor Russell Brand wanted to tie the knot in India, they did so "because it meant something to them."

The Wedding Report says top destination wedding locations include the Bahamas and places in the Caribbean, especially Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

"The Caribbean is still hot and hip," says Cook, whose clients often choose destination locales such as St. Croix, St. John, St. Barts, the Antilles and St. Maarten.

Many West Coast couples choose to marry on location in Mexico or Hawaii. New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles are popular destination wedding cities in the continental U.S.

Typically, destination weddings happen on weekends from Thursday to Sunday or Monday. Some destinations, including Hawaii, are year-round choices, but others can be too hot, such as Mexico in July, or prone to stormy weather, like the Bahamas during hurricane season.

Guest List

Guests often love a getaway wedding because it's a built-in vacation.

One of Weiss' recent weddings had a large guest list — 175 New Yorkers who traveled to Lanai, Hawaii, for the wedding.

While most destination weddings are smaller, with a range from 40 to 60 guests, taking care of these guests is a major priority.

"You're not only planning a wedding, but you're planning a trip and planning for all your guests," says Weiss. "Everyone becomes an out-of-town guest."

Entertaining

Keep those guests happy with lots of activities.

"It's a lot of entertaining," says Weiss, noting how many destination weddings include a Thursday welcome party, a Friday rehearsal dinner, the wedding on Saturday and a brunch on Sunday.

Give guests welcome bags, as well as a very detailed itinerary that explains what's happening and when and whom to contact if a guest has questions.

And remember that just because the wedding is a getaway doesn't mean it's a casual affair. Most destination weddings have a dress code of at least cocktail attire, while some destination nuptials are formal black-tie events.

The cost of a destination wedding can vary, depending on whether or not you cover some or all of your guests' expenses. For example, some brides pay for their bridesmaids' rooms, and others cover the bill for all of their guests' accommodations. Still, brides and grooms are not required to pay their guests' tabs.

Destination Details

Planning a destination wedding generally doesn't take much more time than planning a local wedding.

"It's nice to have a year out," says Weiss. "Do a save-the-date, and be kind to guests."

Be kind to yourself, too, by taking Cook's advice and hiring a planner. "Planning can be nerve-racking," she says. "A seasoned wedding planner can make your life so much easier and better if you're having a destination wedding."

Cook says she typically scouts a property online and figures out whether the venue's style and price points are a match for the couple. Before a hiring decision is made, she and the couple travel to the destination to do a walk-through and firm up the plans.

Another important consideration is handling the legal details of a marriage ceremony and the license.

"I work with the property and work with local officials," says Cook. "There has to be an officiant from the local area who presides over the ceremony, and the license is handled at that location."

When it comes to hiring wedding vendors, some couples choose vendors near the destination spot, whereas others hire vendors from home and fly them to the wedding site.

Grooms want to be involved with the wedding planning process! But only a few want to be committed to every single aspect. In all of my years as a husband to a wedding planner there has only been one groom that was on every single conference call. Don't worry I won't give out your name. Nor will I name the pro athlete grooms that found us on Platinum Weddings!

The majority of grooms are interested in the following items and could pretty much gloss over the rest!!
Food! Of course, this is a no brainer! Guys this is your time to put your "Man Stamp" on the wedding. Share your ideas and thoughts to your planner. She can help bring your craziest ideas to fruition and help it blend in with the rest of the menu or find a way to hide it!
Music! Time to break out those cd's ( do they still have those?) and go thru a time warp and relive those songs from your early days together. Bring back a couple of classics that will make her laugh or cry! Here's your chance to earn a few points by putting some time into it.
Cigar Roller! One of the coolest things you can have at your wedding. You get the most bang for your buck with this option. Besides some really cool photo's, this totally puts a "Man Stamp" on a normally girly event. Even if you don't smoke cigars, it's pretty cool to watch someone roll a cigar that is just for you and your guests. It will make it seem like you went all out even though it didn't cost that much. Remember if you don't have an outside area to smoke you can always wait to light up later or have the cigar roller package them for travel.
Vodka Ice Luge! Another "Man Stamp" item! Another Platinum Wedding item that won't break the bank. Nothing gets the party going like food,

music and alcohol. Throw in some shooters down an ice luge and you've got some great times!! If you wish to spend more there is always the whiskey bar sampler or ice bar with ice champagne buckets!
Suits/Tux! Your wedding photos are going to around for a long time. It amazes me to see so much thought, time and money put into the brides gown and most of the time little to none put into the grooms attire. "I will just rent a tux!" A rental seriously?? Think about it she's going to have hair & makeup professionally done plus on average she will spend $5000 on a gown and you're going to go rent a tux and show up? You don't have to be a metrosexual to see that the rental tux will fit you in the shoulders and nothing else. And nothing makes you feel like a $100 than rental shoes! Guys there are alternatives, buy a nice suit which you can do for less than a thousand dollars and you get to wear more than once. Change it up for the ceremony by adding a bow tie and vest.

Then remove both and maybe change your shirt for the reception. Most brides are opting for the dress change after ceremony. Now you can do the same with out breaking the bank.

This mentoring program is the brainchild of Stacie Francombe the founder of Get Married Magazine & Get Married TV. I was excited to be a part of this program which is designed to inspire small business owners in the wedding industry to achieve higher levels of success through TV, publishing (online and print), and social media.

It wasn't your typical drab seminar, it was colorful, fun, innovative, and Stacie and her husband Dave spoiled all the speakers and attendees with breakfast, lunch and lots of goodies! Exclusive: Ameriie Gears Up For Dream Wedding

Singer Ameriie and former Columbia Records executive Lenny Nicholson have told ESSENCE.com exclusively that they will tie the knot in a lavish oceanfront ceremony in Anguilla tomorrow, Saturday June 25th, at the breathtaking premier hotspot Hotel Viceroy. The pair released the following statement to us today:

"Essence readers have been huge supporters of my music career and it is my joy to share exclusively with you the good news of my wedding tomorrow. I am elated. I have been in love for the past 7 and a half years and it is my joy to share the good news with you. My future husband Lenny Nicholson is a wonderful man whom I love. Thank you so much for your love and support."

The happy couple carefully selected the luxe resort to cater to the unique needs of their special day. To ensure a unique experience for the guests and the utmost privacy, Ameriie and Lenny have bought out the majority of the property, complete with a sunset lounge and pool, a cliff top restaurant, and breathtaking panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. The pair plan to host an intimate group of friends and family. The weekend festivities will include a welcome reception for their honored guests, the ceremony and reception, and to farewell brunch to close.

The bride-to-be, who changed the spelling of her name last year to Ameriie with two "i"s, will walk down the aisle in a custom couture Monique Lhullier gown that was customized just for her by designer Mark Ingram and her groom will wear a Hugo Boss tux. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 5pm. Ameriie’s pastor Reverend Phillip E. Knight, Sr. plans to officiates.

“We are so very excited and full of joy on the eve of our wedding,” Ameriie says in a statement to ESSENCE.com. “We thank everyone for their well wishes and love.“

A true fashionista, the bride has worked with celebrity planner Tiffany Nieves-Cook from WE’s ‘Platinum Weddings’ to create an opulent setting for the event. Some highlights will include 3D glass gobo lights for the property, spectacular rose floral arrangements flown in from China, and a 3.5 ft. 7-tier Sicilian pistachio cake. They aren’t sparing a single detail for their luxurious platinum themed wedding day.

World famous DJ Konflikt will spin tunes at the reception.

Ameriie and Lenny will stay in Anguilla for their honeymoon and spend their first days together as husband in wife in the Viceroy’s 5,000 sq ft. romance villa with a private butler and full staff.

She shared a few insider wedding-planning tips with us; whether you're hiring a planner or doing the dirty work yourself, read on for her thoughts on planning the look of your big day.

It's all about the feeling. As you're planning your wedding's decor, think about more than just how you want it to look. "I would encourage clients to consider their personal style and what they want their wedding to feel like — more of the ambiance or experience they want their guests to have rather than merely a color or style," Tiffany says.
Collect photos of decor you like. The first step in planning a couple's wedding, says Tiffany, is getting to know their individual personalities and style. "I review photos of decor that the client is drawn to; this usually offers one or two main components, which sparks the concept. Once started, the whole concept takes on a life of its own and comes together in a magical way."

Add texture. Texture is a huge wedding trend right now, says Tiffany: "Loads of texture, [from] invitations to linens, and wedding gowns. Texture is big for 2011 and 2012."
Customize! "To take things to the next level for clients, including celebrities. I like to build custom pieces, from sweetheart and cake tables to props and backdrops," says Tiffany. "This gives the client custom, one-of-a-kind decor elements that will make their wedding even more spectacular."
On a budget? Use color. The right use of color can up the "wow" factor on any budget, Tiffany says. "Think deep, rich jewel tones, but use them through the whole wedding — linens, flowers, DIY menu cards, etc. This will create an opulent look that is warm and inviting, and won't break the bank."

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A local couple was feeling the effects of the looming government shutdown. The West Palm Beach newlyweds are on their honeymoon hoping to tour the Grand Canyon, but they have been forced to rearrange their plans.

Tiffany Nieves-Cook and her new husband, John, planned a helicopter and hiking tour in the canyon. That will no longer be happening, if every national park were to be off-limits.

"The whole goal is to have everything done so that you can enjoy and relax and really enjoy your wedding day," said Tiffany, who is a wedding planner herself. "By trade, I'm a plan A, B, and C kind of girl so here we thought we had everything figured out and unfortunately, certainly I don't think this is something that anybody would have ever anticipated," she said.

All national parks, including the Grand Canyon, where the couple planned to spend the next several days, were in limbo.

"To think that a national park would be closing down on a honeymoon is definitely something that you can never plan for," said John.

The couple had to cancel the Grand Canyon portion of their honeymoon and instead extend their stay in Las Vegas.

They are frustrated with having to rearrange a trip they planned months in advance, but the newlyweds know what is happening to them is minor, compared to how a shutdown of the federal government could impact others across the country.

"You've got military families that, if this goes on long enough, they can run into some pay situations, so there are definitely real problems. And as much as we wanted to see that. That's more important," said John.

The couple plans to return to West Palm Beach Monday and will try to visit the Grand Canyon at another time.

Parks that could be impacted in Florida include Biscayne National Park, Everglades National Park, and the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.

As a celebrity wedding planner Tiffany Nieves-Cook was probably more aware than most of the kinds of things that can go wrong when planning a honeymoon. But when it came to scheduling her own, a federal government shutdown figured no where on her list of disasters requiring a contingency plan.

"I've always been a plan A, B and C kind of girl," said Nieves-Cook, who was married April 2 at the Fountainebleu in Miami and planned to spend part of her honeymoon visiting the Grand Canyon and other national parks. "Honestly, it was the farthest thing from my mind."

Cook and her husband John, who live in West Palm Beach, spent a few days gambling, shopping and watching shows in Las Vegas. They had planned a helicopter ride Thursday to the Grand Canyon, but wind storms prevented the trip then and again on Friday. It was then the couple realized that by the time the weather improved, the Grand Canyon would probably be closed to visitors -- thanks to Congress' failure to pass a budget.

"You go on your honeymoon, you think you've planned for everything and then the government shuts down," John Cook said Friday, from his hotel room overlooking the Bellagio fountains.

Robore Amaral wasn't planning to travel nearly as far from home, but the looming federal government shutdown also affected his weekend schedule. Amaral had signed up to attend journaling-in-the Everglades event at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, led by poet, Minx Boren and naturist, Shannon Duffy. The Arthur F. Marshall Foundation announced Thursday that due to the likely government shutdown, the event was canceled, Amaral said.

Between 300 and 500 visitors a day to the Loxahatchee refuge would be turned away if the government shuts down, said Sylvia Pelizza, refuge manager. There will be no bird walks, no guided canoe trips, no roving naturalist and no fishing anywhere on the refuge, which is home to endangered birds, including the Everglade snail kite and the wood stork, as well as a variety of fish species.

While visitors to the park would be affected, so would its staff. Of the 25 staff members, only Pelizza, two law enforcement officers and two firefighters are being asked to report to work if Congress cannot reach a budget deal. Employees -- even those who are working -- will get paid only if Congress passes legislation providing backpay during the shutdown.

"That's worrisome to a lot of people that you don't have your income coming in," Pelizza said. "You're just waiting and anticipating what's going to happen."

On Friday, the Army Corps of Engineers announced in preparation for the shutdown that it was planning to close all Corps-operated campgrounds as of Saturday . That includes St. Lucie South at Lake Okeechobee near Stuart.

"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers understands the impact that these actions might have on the American recreating public if we are required to close our recreation areas," said Michael G. Ensch, chief of operations, Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "We know that this is a time of year when many vacationing families are using or planning to use corps recreation facilities, and we will reopen them for public use and enjoyment as quickly as possible."

Starting Saturday, no new visitors will be allowed into the campgrounds and no new reservations will be accepted. Campers on-site before the shutdown will be required to leave by 8 p.m. Sunday.

Back in Nevada, newlyweds John and Tiffany Cook walked the strip realizing there are worse things than being on honeymoon in Vegas.

"Thank goodness I brought extra evening gowns," Tiffany said. "We may not be able to go get dirty hiking, but we can definitely do the dress up part of our honeymoon."

John and I traveled to Paris last year as we wanted to make our first Valentines Day one to remember. John planned every aspect of our trip, from hotel, sight seeing, to an extremely romantic Valentines Day dinner at Cafe de L'homme which had a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower.

Before we left many of my friends told me they were sure he would propose while we were there, I told them all they were wrong. I mean after all, I am wedding planner, I know that 10% of Americans get engaged on Valentines Day...then in Paris. No way, he would never do what he thought everyone expected, let alone what I might expect. I am not easily surprised, and I knew, when the time came, he would want to knock me off my feet and surprise me.

Our trip was amazing, although daily John felt the need to nap which drove me up a wall, I wondered if his batteries were going to wear out long before mine did when we were older. Really, who stops to take naps while in the most romantic city in the world, and with so much to do and see. I never said a word, but if those little cartoon thought bubbles popped out, over my head, it wouldn't have been pretty.

On our final day, after an amazing V-Day dinner, the Louvre', the Eiffel Tower, amazing food, Versailles, the Arc deTriomphe, and people watching on the Champs Elysees. You guessed it, he suddenly had to take a nap again!!! I was beside myself, it was our last day in Paris and he was going to waste daylight minutes sleeping...GRRRR. I let out a big sigh, smiled at my wonderful yet apparently aging man, and back to the hotel we went. I now know why.

After strongly urging me to take the metro and go shopping, or just go shopping, or just go somewhere, anywhere, so he could nap. As if I was making the noise of high school marching band, while I was laying quietly next to him in bed Facebooking, and growling under my breath so he couldn't hear. I got up to let the old man sleep his Paris time away, and went shopping in Trocadero. As I was gazing at the Eiffel Tower and reflecting on our trip, I had obviously gotten over my dismay towards my own personal sleeping beauty that I left back at the hotel. I decided I would be a good woman and bring him a warm chocolate crepe (he raved about these since our first day in Paris) back to the hotel and wake him in a sweet way. Did I mention that it was FREEZING cold on our trip? Well, I had to keep his chocolate crepe inside my coat to keep it warm for him, then I got that warm and gooshy feeling all over again.

I opened the door to our room, and much to my surprise he was gone, my sleeping beauty must have become the Prince and the Pea who now suffered from insomnia. I left his now very cold crepe along with a note for him to meet me at the Eiffel Tower. Then, I trotted back all excited because he must be out looking for me, so we could spend our last daylight moments in Paris together, awake, so I waited, and waited, and waited, but no cigar. Where could my 6'4" tall dark and handsome sleeping beauty have gone off to? I was sure we must have passed each other without realizing, so I went back to the hotel to wait for him. As I was walking in, he was walking back out to find me. Wow, what a difference a nap makes, my kind of moody, very sleepy man, was now bouncing around like a giddy school boy .

Excited to go back out together, in the daylight, we hadn't gone up the Eiffel tower yet, so off we went. Then just as suddenly, my giddy school boy became fidgety, then kind of moody, and no longer had the patience to wait in line to do something we talked about the whole trip. He now wanted to take a stroll through the Champ de Mar (the park at the base of the Eiffel Tower). Wooohooo, now some ushy gushy romance, this is what I was looking for!!! We walked for a few minutes and I eagerly reached for my handsome man's hand, and I got the ever dreaded "funky fish hand" you know, that i don't really want to hold hands kinda hand. So I reached for his arm, maybe he wanted to be a little closer, nope, I got the "fish arm" too! Ugh...I give up, was my man PMSing, has my Prince Charming turned into a toad?? Just as I was about to give up all hope for a final Parisian day full of romance, he stopped by a bench so we could sit down and just take it all in. Nope wrong again, just as quickly as he sat down, and before I could move in for a kiss, he popped right back up, then said something (can't remember what), probably because it was competing with my cartoon thought bubble hovering above my head, with expletives in caps and bold! Just as I told him, "some of the most stupid things spew from his lips", he dropped to one knee (in the mud I might add) and YES!!!!!

HE ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM, only I couldn't figure out what he was saying, due to the noise my many popping thought bubbles were making. I had no idea why he was on the ground, until I looked down and saw the ring box. I couldn't believe it, my jaw dropped, I started to cry, he did it..he popped the question!!!! I was in such disbelief, I asked him to ask me again, and again, and again. I still couldn't believe it, on one of the last times he asked me, he asked if I was ever going to give him an answer. I was in such disbelief that I forgot to answer him. At this point I had jumped into his arms, he was carrying me through the park and I said YES easily as many times as he asked me!!!

So, why all the naps your asking...well apparently, after months of looking to find the right one, the ring he order prior to our trip so he could propose to me in Paris didn't arrive before we left. He was trying to figure out how to purchase a ring, any ring, even a gum ball ring, to serve as my temporary engagement ring until we got back back home. So he set up the nap scam daily so I wouldn't suspect anything. Yes, as I was finally out shopping, which I didn't do any other day much to his dismay, he finally got rid of me long enough to sprint like a 6'4" track star down the Champs Elysees to find a store to purchase one for me. The thought of him in full sprint amongst the much smaller stature Parisians is as funny as my popping thought bubbles.

He "gets" me, he knocks me off my feet, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him!

Carolina & Pablo's Dream Designed South Beach Wedding

I wanted to share this very special thank you below that I received from Carolina. Although I am always touched by my brides as I share such a special time in their lives, and I'm moved by the notes I receive after the wedding. This one in particular had tears streaming down my face!

From Carolina:

Every bride has two great loves. The first is, of course, her groom. The second is, or should be, her wedding planner. No bride is complete without her planning soul mate. In her planner she will find her partner and liaison; the person that can finish her sentences and filter her ideas in order to create her DREAM wedding. Tiffany was my partner in crime. I knew from the moment I met her that I wanted her to take the reins of my event. This, coming from a self-proclaimed micro-manger, is quite the statement.

Our engagement was…a very long engagement. We had 15 months to plan our wedding, and yet I wanted to know every detail from the get-go. No matter how many times my mother told me to take deep breaths, no matter how many times my fiancé told me that it was “just a party,” I wanted everything in-line straight away. It wasn’t until I received from Tiffany a clearly outline plan of attack that I realized that we had ALL the time in the world! Then it was time to tackle the task…

One of the most important things for us was the FOOD; we knew we wouldn’t sign a contract with a venue without first having a full tasting; not loving the food was a deal-breaker, no ifs, ands, or buts. This criterion took us on a culinary journey of some of the most sought-out South Beach hotels…we ate everywhere! Never once did Tiffany complain or suggest that we settle for something we weren’t crazy about. After countless tasting, we finally chose The National Hotel for our wedding. It offered everything we wanted: beach ceremony, intimate one event-exclusivity, authentic Miami Beach Art Deco style, and GREAT food. Yes, I was a bride that actually wanted to eat and ENJOY the food at her wedding; and Tiffany made sure I did.

When we first sat down to discuss our nuptials, my fiancé and I agreed that we wanted an intimate wedding; we also agreed on a beach wedding, but we definitely did not want to lose the glam-factor. Tiffany came armed with a team that could wow Oprah! She was able to transform an outdoor, pool-side venue into a sophisticated, contemporary setting that left our guests awe-inspired. From lighting to décor, from party favors to place cards, everything was done with a twist. We did not want a traditional wedding; we wanted a Dream Design Wedding…thank you Tiff for making our night an unforgettable affair!

But most of all, thank you Tiffany for guiding me through and allowing me to enjoy the planning process, which can be confusing and frustrating at times. As I said on the night of my wedding, I was not only lucky have found the perfect planner, I was very lucky to have found such a great friend!

While Kerri spent the day shopping her fiance' and Dream Design groom, Matt Strube, was out for a grooms day of golfing. Although it was a blustery day and Matt hadn't taken out his clubs since September, thanks to the Maryland winter, the wind didn't affect him. Matt played a fantastic game and finished up the long 18th hole with a beautiful par! Dream Design groom Marty Booker (ex Pro Bowl WR), now a Florida resident was Mr. Par all day long!

Destination Power Planning Tiffany style with Kerri & Matt

Recently my new clients Kerri & Matt came to town with Kerri's parents for some wedding power planning Tiffany style. Our mission was to find the perfect location for their destination wedding. Armed with our water bottles and power bars (so we didn't pass out from food deprivation), off we went to see many fantastic locations that could accommodate the size of their wedding.

On our 70 mile trek from Miami to Palm Beach we looked at the gorgeous Fontainebleau Resort, The Ritz Carlton South Beach, the beautiful Ritz Carlton Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Resort, the fabulous Ritz Carlton Palm Beach, a few others in between, and ending at the Breakers Palm Beach.At the end of this fabulous journey the couple had seen the spectrum of locations, ranging in style from modern chic to old world charm. Any one of these amazing venues would be a wonderful choice for their multi-event wedding week.

Although it was a difficult decision, in the end the couple chose The Breakers Palm Beach . They fell in love with the old world romantic feel of this grand property. Along with the amazing different space options on property for each of their events planned, this is sure to be a spectacular wedding weekend!

Next stop for Kerri, a weekend of gown shopping. While we entertain Matt with a fabulous weekend of golf.Yes ladies, although it is ALWAYS about the bride, at Dream Design we make sure the groom is also treated in VIP style.

How We Met

I haven't had much time to post our wedding bio updates lately, but I will be posting several over the next few weeks.

I am often asked how JC and I met, so I thought it would be fitting to start my new posts at the very beginning. After all, that's how all good fairy tales begin.

We met on a fishing expedition. Now, I know you picture us on a boat, or maybe a pier, nope not even close. This was a different kind of fishing, you see John had an affinity for sports fishing, but not the type you do on the water, this type you do online, he called it trolling...

That's right folks, we met online, on a dating website appropriately named "Plenty of Fish" and although there may be plenty of fish in the sea. It is only once in a lifetime you reel in the "Prized or Perfect Catch"!!

Rumor has it that they also visited several local wedding cake locations for private tastings.
